Remote and charming, Tenakee Springs is the quintessential Alaskan fishing village. Home to a 104-degree natural sulfur hot spring, Tenakee is a site long-used by the Tlingit people.
Established as a cannery town in 1916, today Tenakee Springs has a small year-round population which swells in the summertime with seasonal second-home owners, tourists and transient yacht traffic. A narrow road separates the homes against the hillside from those built on pilings out over the beach on Tenakee Inlet.
Synder Mercantile, the historic town general store founded in 1899 and one of Alaska’s oldest continuously operating businesses, sits in the center of Tenakee Springs across from the bath house enclosing the natural hot spring. The bath house has been recently renovated and has separate hours for women and men, alternating throughout the day.
Tenakee Springs has two restaurants. Rosie’s Blue Moon Café has been serving the best burgers in Tenakee Inlet for decades, and also offers chow mein and cold beer. Party Time Bakery is a great choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Party Time is a full-service restaurant occupying the grand historic Shamrock building in the center of town. Darius and his crew offer delicious made-to-order breakfasts—everything from pancakes to Eggs Benedict and daily specials.
Party Time Bakery is also Tenakee’s primary art gallery with wonderful paintings, prints, handcrafts and other collectibles, many of which are produced by local Tenakee Springs artists. Alaska Seaplanes’ own Terry Kennedy sells her watercolor paintings and prints at Party Time Bakery. Terry is the artist behind Alaska Seaplanes’ iconic poster.
Tenakee Springs is an adventurer’s dream with opportunities for wildlife viewing in every direction. Whether you’re looking to beach comb for giant scallop shells, watch for breaching Humpback whales, see salmon returning to spawn, catch eagles soaring overhead, or spy the occasional otter playing with his food—Tenakee Springs is a naturalist’s paradise. If you want to get out on the water in Tenakee Inlet, Fishing Bear Charters has both guided eco-tours aboard a comfortable motor vessel, and self-guided kayak rentals.
