The largest national forest in the United states is called the Tongass National Forest, a name derived from the "Tongass" clan of the Tlingit Indians that live near the southern edge of the forest. Ninety percent of the Southeaster Alaskan Panhandle is contained within the borders of the Tongass.

With the cooperation of the National Forest Service, a visitor has a very special opportunity to stay and camp within the greatest of our National Forests. U.S.F.S. maintains 148 recreation cabins, placed on remote lakes, rivers, streams and beaches. The cabins are located near great fishing and hunting grounds and you always have the great view of the Tongass.

Alaska Seaplanes Service have round trip fares to all the cabins located in the northern Tongass National Forest. One of Alaska Seaplanes Service many special aerial tours may also be added to the cabin trip, making for a memorable wilderness experience.

These wilderness cabins can be reserved for a certain amount per night. All of the cabins have oil or wood stoves and a few have barrier free access. Most of the cabins located on lakes and tidewaters have small boats.
