A rich history, dramatic scenery, and endless activities make Juneau, Alaska one of America's most exciting state capitals. Originally a Tlingit settlement on the banks of the Gastineau Channel, today Juneau is the seat of Alaska's state government and a thriving tourist destination for adventure seekers from across the globe.

About Juneau

While its current name is Juneau, that is not always the name it was known by. The community was previously known as Rockwell and before that it was known as Harrisburg. Even before it was known as Harrisburg, Rockwell, or Juneau, the village was a settlement for the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian tribes that knew it as a different name. The community received its current namesake after Joseph Juneau teamed up with a member of the Tlingit tribe and discovered gold plots in the land. Not long after this discovery Juneau became a popular settlement town.

Today, Juneau is a thriving community that offers small-town hospitality as well as city amenities. The town has become a hub for tourism and cruise ship passengers and with its mountains, rivers, glaciers, and forests Juneau offers majestic scenery to behold.

There are plenty of attractions in Juneau for travelers to enjoy. Visitors can partake in a variety of activities, such as exploring Historic Downtown Juneau or the Mendenhall Glacier and Visitor Center.
